Shoes

Shoes on white, standing on their own

Lift a pair of shoes off the floor they were shot on and stand them on clean white with a soft shadow under the soles.

Shoe buyers want the shape, the soles and the wear. PicDad cuts the pair out, keeps the laces, sets them on white with a contact shadow so they don’t float, and exports a 2000 × 2000 JPEG large enough to zoom in on scuffs and stitching.

What makes it tricky

Shoes, honestly

  • Laces and gaps. Laces and the gaps between two shoes are fine detail. Check them at full size, and touch up any gap that kept a bit of floor.
  • Floors and shadows. A wooden floor and the shoe’s own shadow are the usual background. The cut-out removes both, and the studio draws a soft shadow back in.
  • Showing wear. Resale buyers trust photos of the soles, heels and insoles. Shoot those too, and use the same look for the whole listing.

Before you shoot

A better photo to start from

  1. Shoot the pair from the side at a slight angle, at shoe height
  2. Give them a plain floor or sheet and daylight from one side
  3. Add the soles, heels, insoles, size label and any scuffs
  4. Clean the shoes first: dust shows on white
